Martin Brubaker – From Bridge to Boats:

Brubaker Origins/Migrations in Europe

martin-e-brubaker-02We know where our name is first recorded (Bruggbach), on the NE shore of Lake Zurich, Switzerland circa 1335 AD. Modern Swiss authorities have placed a neighborhood marker and street sign in recognition. By the 1500’s, our family is found on the opposite side of the Lake as well, accompanied again by street and village names.

Because Brubakers were active in the religious controversies of the times, and were willing to put their name on various documents, we can trace some of their movements in Switzerland, and through several generations to fertile lands in what is now Alsace, France, then the Palatine region of Germany before coming to America, where our first records are from Lancaster County in 1717.
